The guardian was dead and with his death the spells that coiled around me and my prison loosened.
Glee bubbled in my chest.
This was my chance. The master had sent me to capture a chosen one and bring the chosen one to him.
The spells loosened further and outside the prison I sensed a herd of humans with weak, frantic hearts huddled in the nearby town. The supernatural beings were mixed in hidden like wolves in sheep’s clothing.
I was too far away to sink into their bodies and steal the reins from their helpless hands. Humans were too weak for me to take over for long, but a supernatural could be my chariot.
The spell unraveled enough that further away, in the distance, I could sense that glamor on the lake had faded and I could see its true power. Interesting. I would report that to the Master.
I can finally connect to the network that all demons have access to. I don’t need the demons on the network. Not now.
I clenched my fist for the first time in ten years. Another minute or two and I would be able to leave the prison and continue my mission. Excitement unfurled in my chest.
The guardian’s life force surged back. The prison spells sparked back to life with his resurgence. The coils tightened around me.
No!
Rage filled my stomach and flashed along my limbs, adding to my power. Even so, I lost my fight with the constriction. No matter how hard I struggled, I could not move.
The guardian was still alive and gaining strength.
I only had a moment before the spells would cut off my last hope. Anger and resentment that I had to rely on my minions snarled through my system. Without that extra energy, I would already be trapped again.
“Free me and I will reward you!” I sent over the demon network. I left the location signature of the nearby town.
Responses pinged as my connection broke, and the protections smothered me.
I’d laugh if I could. The guardian was too late.
It wouldn’t be long before my minions would come and free me.
And then I would make him pay.
